Obama's Economic Recovery Plan

President-elect Barack Obama didn't have much in the way of positive news to give on the American economy in his recent speech at George Mason University. "In short, a bad situation could become dramatically worse," he said as he outlined the numbers on unemployment, falling revenues and the mind-boggling national deficit.
However, the future president was not without hope. "I don't believe it's too late to change course, but it will be if we don't take dramatic action as soon as possible," Obama said. That dramatic action comes with a $775 billion price tag.
Obama's stimulus package would include an oversight structure known as the Economic Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, which would track how the federal government spends the money. There would also be a website that would outline his plan and allow the public to track the money and the progress of the plan.
According to Obama's speech, his proposal would be called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Although his speech did not give great detail about his plan, some of the spending would be roughly broken down like this:
300 billion in tax cuts, both for individuals and businesses. According to Obama, 95% of middle-class, working families will receive $1000 tax cut.
$77 billion to extend unemployment benefits, including subsiding health care for those without jobs.
$398 billion in job-creation projects, such as rebuilding roads and bridges and expanding alternative energy programs. Obama promises to create 3 million jobs over the next few years in the areas of infrastructure, energy, health care and education. "It's a plan that recognizes both the paradox and the promise of this moment -- the fact that there are millions of Americans trying to find work, even as, all around the country, there is so much work to be done," Obama said in his speech.
Not included in this project, but on Obama's list of problems to tackle are the growing number of foreclosures, shoring up financial intuitions from future failure, and rewriting financial regulations to ensure better accountability. The number of problems facing the nation are daunting, but Obama's speech indicated his willingness to get right to work.

Hillary Clinton's pantsuits have been a popular topic since the Clintons were in the White House and during her candidacy, that trend continued. Governor Sarah Palin's alleged campaign wardrobe shopping spree was and is a controversial subject that will surely keep journalists occupied for some time to come. We were provided with the name of the designer of every dress worn by candidates and candidate's spouses throughout this historic election. This isn't unusual.
What is, perhaps, unusual is that certain events in this election brought the wardrobe of President Elect Barack Obama into focus. During the campaign, Obama's references to his conservative outlook on suits, and his tendency to wear an open collar without a necktie caused minor stirs in the national news. As a result, Mr. Obama's fashion preferences have become an uncommonly high-profile item. It isn't often that the men's fashion industry finds an icon, but that may very well be the case in this instance.
Since the election, sales of the suit that our President Elect prefers have reportedly risen dramatically. The suit, from Hartmax, is a sensible cut, with sharp, clean lines, so it isn't really surprising that it would gain popularity after a bit of extra exposure in the media as the choice of a successful presidential candidate. Of course, the fact that the candidate in question has a youthful, vigorous appearance probably didn't do any harm. Mr. Obama's air of confidence and slightly casual mannerisms are also likely to have been of some influence. In any case, it seems that the American male has definitely taken notice. We can expect to see more of this and similar styles on businessmen and professionals, at least in the near future.

His desire to change the national culture may spell his downfall. President Barack Obama will need to act fast to begin his plans for a set of more drastic measures to extricate the United States from its present weakening economic condition. This is what Newsweek International Editor Fareed Zakaria wrote in his February 2 Newsweek essay entitled "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)". "The American financial system is effectively broken. Major banks are moving toward insolvency, and credit activity remains extremely weak. As long as the financial sector remains moribund, American consumers and companies -- who collectively make up 80 percent of GDP -- will not have access to credit, and economic activity cannot really resume on any significant scale. We have not turned the corner. In fact, we can't even see the corner right now," Zakaria writes.

Former International Monetary Fund chief economist Kenneth Rogoff in a statement said that the current recession is like a runaway train and Obama's effort is all about preventing it from running off a cliff. According to Zakaria, President Obama "faces a terrible dilemma. He needs to act quickly and on a massive scale."

Large scale action is needed to keep the financial system from bleeding to death. The general American public, however, believes that far too much money have already been spent on bailing out the ailing banks.
Zakaria believes that the U.S. has not spent enough. According to him, the present economic crisis has caused an extreme degradation of American power. Even during the Iraq war, when much of the global community was infuriated by ex-President Bush's unilateral stance, it was highly held that America possessed the world's most advanced economy and its financial system were the most advanced and developed.
That system is now perceived globally as a fraud, and the reactions of political and business sector range from utter disbelief to rage at the image the U.S. now projects.
Senior Editor Daniel Gross writes of how an alarming number of firms and companies are giving up their finance-restructuring work and instead sell off their inventory and shut down. "Rather than soldier on, many operators have opted to simply fold, returning money to investors.
Companies, homeowners and money managers willing to quit rather than fight is both a symptom of the nation's deep economic woes and emblematic of the challenge the Obama administration faces," Gross writes. "Our 'Yes, We Can' president is going to have to fix a 'No, We Can't' economy."

Obama, Me and the Blackberry
I have quite a few things in common with Obama, and even more things dissimilar. The one similarity however that has surprised and intrigued me is his open affection for his blackberry. I didn't agree with him on many political and social issues, but boy do I get him when it comes to his feelings about his blackberry. To come between me and my blackberry is like coming between an NRA fanatic and his gun; "The only way your going to get it is to pry it from my cold dead hands!" This may seem extreme to anyone who has not experienced the power of what that little machine can do.
Blackberry aficionados tend to be people with busy lives who want to maintain order. We want to remain personal and personable without appearing to work at it. There are those who are blessed with a natural recall that allows them to remember names, faces, dates and personal information. They will, with ease, meet someone they have not seen for a period of time and greet them by name and personalize the contact by asking about a family member by name. The person who is greeted will then feel special and pleased at having been remembered in such detail. Well I am not like that. I need a cheat sheet! My blackberry is my cheat sheet. I can quickly store info about a person along with their phone number and even their face (if they would allow a photo). My recall of faces is just fine; it's all the other details after that which are problematic. It is just not cool to say "I know you from somewhere, I recognized your face, just tell me your name and who you are and what you do again?"
My blackberry also entertains me and keeps me healthy. My exercise routine would not be complete without the accompaniment of my music, which my blackberry provides. I have uploaded on my blackberry's mp3 over 100 songs, which gives me more than enough time to engage in a 30 - 60 minute workout routine. While walking I can listen to something and not miss any callers who may wish to contact me during that time. With the addition of the Bluetooth, I am hands free to accept my calls, and once the call is terminated, I am once again surrounded by my music. It is all so convenient.
Like most PDA's today, the blackberry is also able to go on the internet and access files and e-mails. For me this was not a big seller. I access the internet from my desk computer and don't care to watch video's or read e-mail on such a small screen. But for those who love their social networking, IMing or texting, the blackberry can do all that for you also.

My blackberry is synced to my office calendar at the end of every day and again at the beginning of the work day. The two calendars match without taking valuable time to manually input or delete updated entries. For the busy professional this is a work of genius.
After reading that President Obama would be denied his blackberry for security reasons I felt an empathetic rush of pain. Having experienced the intensity of love that one can have for one's blackberry, I began to worry about how he will adjust to being forcibly separated from such a large part of his life. On the campaign trail he had been trying to kick the nicotine habit, I don't know how successful he was at that. Now he was being asked to kick the blackberry habit. Sometimes I think service to this country asks too much! Well President Obama, I want you to know I am here for you. Did I mention that I am a psychotherapist? Blackberry aficionados tend to be people with busy lives who want to maintain order. We want to remain personal and personable without appearing to work at it. There are those who are blessed with a natural recall that allows them to remember names, faces, dates and personal information. They will, with ease, meet someone they have not seen for a period of time and greet them by name and personalize the contact by asking about a family member by name. The person who is greeted will then feel special and pleased at having been remembered in such detail. Well I am not like that. I need a cheat sheet! My blackberry is my cheat sheet. I can quickly store info about a person along with their phone number and even their face (if they would allow a photo). My recall of faces is just fine; it's all the other details after that which are problematic. It is just not cool to say "I know you from somewhere, I recognized your face, just tell me your name and who you are and what you do again?"
My blackberry also entertains me and keeps me healthy. My exercise routine would not be complete without the accompaniment of my music, which my blackberry provides. I have uploaded on my blackberry's mp3 over 100 songs, which gives me more than enough time to engage in a 30 - 60 minute workout routine. While walking I can listen to something and not miss any callers who may wish to contact me during that time. With the addition of the Bluetooth, I am hands free to accept my calls, and once the call is terminated, I am once again surrounded by my music. It is all so convenient.

I access the internet from my desk computer and don't care to watch video's or read e-mail on such a small screen. But for those who love their social networking, IMing or texting, the blackberry can do all that for you also.
